Overview


If you are 16 or over and can apply for a student visa to study in the UK:

  • Registered in a course through an approved student sponsor.
  • You have enough money to study and support yourself – the amount will depend on your situation.
  • Can communicate orally, read and write English.
  • If you are 16 or 17 years old, make sure your parents know this and give you their consent when you apply.
  • If you are between sixteen and seventeen years old, you may be able to get a child student visa if you try to enroll at an independent school in the UK.
  • This visa replaces the Tier 4 (General) Student visa.

When to apply

When you can apply depends on whether you’re applying from inside or outside the UK.

Applying from outside the UK

The earliest you can apply for a visa is 6 months before you start your course.

You’ll usually get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks.

Applying from inside the UK

You can apply up to 3 months before the start of the course.

You must apply before your current visa expires. You must start your new course within 28 days of the expiry of your current visa.

How long you can stay

How long you can stay depends on the length of your course and the studies you have already completed in the UK.

If you are 18 or over and your studies are at degree level, you can usually stay in the UK for up to 5 years. If the level is below degree level, you can usually stay in the UK for two years.

Staying longer in the UK

You may be able to:

  • This may include extending your visa if you qualify, such as staying in the UK for further studies.
  • If you are already in the UK, you must also switch to a student visa of another immigration category.
  • Postgraduate Conversion Visa which enables you to stay in the UK for at least two years after completing.

When you can travel to the UK

You can arrive early. This can be either:

  • 1 week prior to the start of your course, if it does not last more than six months
  • up to 1 month before classes begin, if your course is longer than six months.
  • However, you should not go to the UK before midnight on your visa application date regardless of when does course start.

Fees

It costs:

  • £ 363 for applying Student visa from outside UK
  • Cost of £490 for adding or converting to a Student visa from within the UK.
For each individual who joins you, you are required to pay the visa fee.

Healthcare surcharge


You will also be required to pay the healthcare surcharge as part of your application process.

The length of your visa determines how much you have to pay. Find out how much you will need to pay in advance before submitting the application.

Your partner and children


Your dependants may qualify to be allowed into UK or reside there for a long time.
You must be one of the following:

  • a government-sponsored student who embarks on the beginning of a course with duration more than 6 months.
  • a part-time student on postgraduate courses (RQF level 7 or above) that last for nine months or more
If your postgraduate level course starts on or after 1 January 2024, it must be either:
  • a PhD or other doctorate
  • a research-based higher degree

What you can and cannot do

You can:

study
work as a student union sabbatical-officer.
You may be able to get a job - this will depend on what you are studying and whether the work is during or out of term.

You cannot:

  • reclaim public monies (benefits and pensions).
  • work in particular types of occupations, such as a professional player or sports coach.
  • be self-employed
  • study at a school or an academy that is part of the local authority (maintained)
  • You’ll be informed of permitted and restricted activities on a Student visa in case the application is approved.

Apply

You must apply online.

  • You have to provide proof of identity as part of your application. This will vary depending on which country you are from as well as the specific nature of your passport or residence permit.
You’ll either:
  • use the ‘UK Immigration: You will also create or sign in to your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account ‘ ID Check’ app, which you can use to scan your identity document.
