NL Scholarship, later Holland scholarship is for talented international students to study an English-taught Bachelor’s degree course at Leiden University.
Eligibility requirements
You are not entitled to support through the Netherlands student financial aid scheme. This means that you do not qualify for the discounted rate of statutory tuition fee.You have not studied at a Dutch university or the one of applied sciences in Netherlands. This means that you had your pre-university education outside The Netherlands.

For talented non-EEA students enrolling in one of the following English-taught Bachelor’s programmes:

- English Language and Culture
- International Relations and Organizations
- International Studies
- Liberal Arts and Sciences: Global Challenges
- Linguistics
- Philosophy: Global and Comparative Perspectives
- Psychology
- Security Studies
- South and Southeast Asian Studies
- Urban Studies
Scholarship
5,00 Euros to be paid once when you reached The Netherlands in the first year of study.
Application process
- Who are you? Please introduce yourself. (max 100 words)
- How does your performance as a student make you talented? (max 150 words)
- What else makes you a great student other than your grades? Explain your activities and wider interests than studies. (max 150 words)
- Explain briefly why you want to study in Leiden University specifically and what is it about this scholarship that inspires your application. (max 150 words)
- Include a financial plan in your motivation letter. In this programme, indicate where you intend to get the funding for all three years of your bachelors degree. (max 1 page)
- On or before 1 February, you need to apply online for one of the above Bachelor’s programmes at Leiden University.
- In the Apply screen in your online application after submitting an application for admission, click on Scholarships. You will now see the NL scholarship in the scholarships section if you are allowed to apply for it.
Prospective NL Scholarship candidates can submit their motivation letter and financial plan by uploading all of them into one PDF-file before the deadline.
Application Deadline
Late applications
Applications received late will not be accepted. It is the student’s duty to ensure that they submit their applications for admission as well as those of scholarships before NL Scholarship deadline.
Selection process
All NL Scholarship applications will be reviewed by an appointment committee who bases their decisions on the applicant’s prior academic record, diversity of candidates and information submitted with scholarship motivation letter. The Leiden University Scholarships Team will notify you on the results within (up to) 6 weeks from the deadline.
