Abel Scholarship

CSUN awards a $1100 annual Abel Scholarship to an outstanding sophomore or junior mathematics major on campus based upon academic criteria. The students can be nominated by themselves or by an instructor. All applicants must submit a brief biographical sketch and unofficial transcript, in addition to two letters of recommendation from Math Department faculty. The deadline of the application is Monday April 30, 2024.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The University stipulates that students need to possess an undergraduate degree with a 2.5 GPA or above, and have achieved at least 3.0 in the last sixty units of study

The Mathematics Department requires that applicants have grades of B or better in the following upper-division mathematics classes:

• Math 350 at CSUN is considered equal to Advanced Calculus.
• The advanced linear algebra course (Math 462 from CSUN)

APPLICATION PROCEDURES:

The Graduate Program requires applicants to fill in separate applications for the University and Department of Mathematics.

1. Applications to the University are submitted at http: //www.csumentor.com/. This section of the application should be accompanied by official transcripts.

2. Applications to the Department require the following materials.

• Departmental Application Form (available on the math dept. forms page)
• Transcripts of all college work (unofficial are acceptable)
• Two letters of recommendation.

Scholarship Benefits

The grant can cover for one month and only for the applicant up to (5,000 Dollars):

✔ Visa fees

✔ Travel insurance charges 

✔ Living expenses for one month basis (daily allowance based on cost of living in the selected country/city, travel costs per day and any other daily essential). Please click here for a list. If the accommodation in question includes breakfast or any other meals, daily fee will decrease accordingly.

✔ Hotel accommodation expenses in the host state (a hotel could only be applied for provided that a statement of non-availability guesthouse or rented flat from organizer has been given and max. 4 weeks. If you decide to stay longer than 4 weeks, hiring an appropriate apartment or guesthouse becomes necessary. But cash payment receipts for accommodation expenses cannot be accepted Your payments should be made using a traceable form of payment.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

1.   hold at the time of application a PhD in Mathematics

2.   be based in a developing country at the time of application

3.   hold a position in a university/ research institution 

4.   be in the early stages of their professional careers, more precisely

5. be under 35 years of age at the day of the application deadline.
